On September 17, 2026, Anthropic launched the Life Sciences Verification Program (LSVP), a program that provides life sciences professionals access to the Mythos, Opus, and Sonnet models with tailored safeguards to facilitate biology-related tasks. The program is being released in beta phase and is initially aimed at teams and institutions, with plans for future expansion.

Objective and Scope of the Life Sciences Verification Program

The LSVP allows the use of advanced artificial intelligence models for tasks that are restricted in the generally available Anthropic models, known as Fable. These tasks include drug discovery, biological research, clinical development, and manufacturing. It is targeted at a diverse range of organizations, from academic labs to startups and pharmaceutical companies.

To gain access, applicants must undergo a verification process that assesses their research credentials, safety standards, and ethical oversight. After verification, they can apply for grants for “Standard Use” or “High-risk Use,” depending on their needs.

Types of Access and Usage Conditions

Standard use grants cover most work in life sciences, including routine workflows in research and development. These grants can be awarded to entire teams for daily activities and are renewed annually. They provide access to the Mythos 5.1, Opus 5, and Sonnet 5 models with tailored classifiers to facilitate scientific tasks.

High-risk use is an add-on for specific projects that require the removal of safeguards blocking certain requests in standard access. They are assigned to a single research project, renewed every six months, and require a more rigorous evaluation. Currently, high-risk access is available for the Opus 5 and Sonnet 5 models. For Mythos, this access is limited to a small group with increased oversight.

Safeguards and Monitoring in the Program

Anthropic has designed the LSVP safeguards to protect against threats such as access spoofing, malicious use by internal employees, and misuse of automated agents. The program allows organizations to specify what constitutes safe use within their teams or projects, following an assessment of their credibility and oversight in life sciences.

The LSVP shifts the safeguard system from real-time blocking to offline monitoring that identifies potential misuse through behavioral patterns. This allows legitimate work to continue with fewer interruptions. To achieve this, data associated with suspicious activities must be retained for 30 days.

Availability and Enrollment Process

The program is available on the official Anthropic console for API use and on the Claude platforms for enterprise and team plans. It is not available for individual plans or third-party platforms. It is also not yet offered to organizations with Business Associate Agreement (BAA) contracts, making it unsuitable for data protected under HIPAA.

Support and User Testimonials

Organizations such as Xaira Therapeutics, Edison Scientific, and Manifold Bio have expressed interest in applying Anthropic's models through the program. They emphasize the importance of combining reliable access with accountability mechanisms to advance biomedical research and drug discovery.
